Perception: My Greatest Tool

For the past few days, I’ve been pretty sick and being sick sucks. I drink veggies, workout, and sleep a lot to prevent this as much as possible. But it looks like I’ve caught some terrible cold or virus and it’s teaching me a huge lesson: I can’t change that I am currently sick, but I can change how I perceive my situation.

I get really mad at my body when I’m sick. Why? Because I become unable to do what I need to do; like work on ASSET, go to school, workout, create new recipes. Being bed-ridden, puts me on what feels like “halt”. But in actuality I’ve got much greater assignments to face while being sick. My first lesson was to forgive my body for being sick. And gosh was it hard-because I was so mad I couldn’t get my work done. But I realized my body is telling me I need to take care of myself a little more then I have been. Getting ill was a reminder to slow down. I wouldn’t have been able to recognize this, if I wasn’t able to forgive my body. I had to remind myself of all that I am grateful for and meditate a lot, but from this hard work has come great stride in my forgiveness lesson.

Which brings me to my next point and the greatest tool for our toolboxes: perception. We can’t change the events that occur in our life, but we can choose how we respond to them and that comes from perception. Our life can be going horribly wrong, but if we can perceive “bad” situations as learning lessons, imagine how much more personal growth would occur. Perception dictates our life, not the events that occur. Because we change those events, by how we respond. I believe when we give “bad” things power, we lose our control over them. They win. What do I mean by giving them power? We give events power by obsessing over them, letting them beat us down, and choosing to not see the lesson within them. But we are in control of our perception and if we can harness that tool, we can become masters of our own lives.

How do we shift our perception? For me, I’ve been sending myself words of wisdom that I have after I mediate. I’ll email myself beautiful messages at night that help me create a more positive tomorrow. These are messages that create a new way of thinking. Sometimes they make feel uncomfortable because of how true they are! Here are some examples:

Hey, Look into NLP. It actually helps with these issues. It is great that you are resourceful like this.
    Darren.
P.S. Heard this before, ” we can’t change the wind, but we can change where our sail points to.”

Perception obviously plays a key role in shaping our mentality and the our life path. I enjoyed reading this piece of writing and I think as we change our perception to either positive or negative, we change our destiny as a whole as well.
